Statement from NAPE

The way we work for Primary Education:

The National Association for Primary Education speaks for young children and all who live and work with them. It is committed to the celebration and exploration of best practice in primary education and the early years and its core values are bound up with inclusivity of approach, the centrality of a broadly based and balanced curriculum across the key stages and the significance of a developmental orientation to education which respects the role of play in the early years and the way in which the learning process is nourished by the interplay of action, visual imagery and language.

We welcome all Primary School staff, including Headteachers, Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Parents, School Governors. Schools Inspectors, Administrators, and entire School Communities to become members. We also welcome student membership, for which there is no charge. Members have an important voice exercised democratically.

To that end, meetings of members both locally and nationally can be easily organised when the need arises. The annual general meeting held each September is an important time for members to have their say.

NAPE Members are provided with publications such as the termly e-NAPE news, the NAPE termly journal called ‘Primary First’, together with policy statements which are available on the website. The website provides up-to-date news, resources and opinions.

The Christopher Jarman Handwriting Scheme can be viewed on the website and is linked to YouTube videos. These are a valuable resource for the hard-working class teacher. The NAPE YouTube site and the NAPE podcasts are a ‘must see and hear’ for all those teaching and involved or interested in primary education.

The association is administered by an elected National Council meeting termly to review progress and discuss national issues. Detailed administration is delegated to an Executive Committee which reports to the Council.

NAPE is keen to develop its links with other organisations, and as such is a prominent member of the Primary Umbrella Group which brings together key organisations working in the primary sector including subject associations and unions. This group facilitates a cross flow of information, co-operation and partnership.
