Origins and Development

NaPTEC began life under a different name - the Undergraduate Primary Teacher Education Conference (UPTEC). NaPTEC had its origins in late 1983 in response to central government initiatives that led to Circular 3/84 and the activities of the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (CATE). The initiatives of several Primary ITE Course Leaders led to the foundation of UPTEC. UPTEC held three national conferences and established a standing committee.

Out of UPTEC came NaPTEC which has continued to broaden its membership to reflect the interests in I T E, of those in schools, H E I's and the public sector. In recent years NaPTEC has worked closely with UCET and the GTC(E) in the promotion and organisation of staff development workshops.
